Impact on HIV/AIDS
‣ Enrolled southeastern Liberia’s first AIDS patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART): enrolled
the first patients with AIDS on ART at a rural public hospital in Liberia.
‣ Established one of the largest rural AIDS clinics in Liberia: TH established the HIV Equity
Initiative, Liberia’s first and one of its largest rural public HIV prevention and treatment programs, a community-led initiative that has enrolled and provides treatment and care for over 300 HIV/AIDS patients.
‣ Trained the first non-physician clinicians to administer ART: With National AIDS & STI
Control Program (NACP) and the Clinton Foundation, TH successfully piloted training of the first four physician assistants to prescribe antiretroviral therapy at a public health center.
‣ Developed a national model for rural HIV care: Developed an innovative community health
work model of HIV care delivery that is being adapted nationally by NACP. Our model has led
to a survival rate of greater than 85% at one year.
‣ Helped Liberia win US$78 million from the Global Fund: TH served as a member of the core
team that wrote the successful Global Fund Round 8 HIV application for US$78 million.
‣ Represented Liberia at International Research Forums: TH has made presentations about Liberia's HIV Equity Initiative been delivered at the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, Harvard
University and Massachusetts General, and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospitals in Boston.
Impact on Mental Health
‣ Published a groundbreaking national mental health study: TH and other partners conducted a groundbreaking national prevalence study of mental health disorders among former participants in Liberia's war and victims of sexual violence. The study revealed over 40% of Liberian adults are affected by post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and over 10% have considered suicide. Former war participants and victims of sexual violence suffer a higher burden of mental health disorders.
‣ Helped draft Liberia's First National Mental Health Policy: TH served as member of the Ministry of Health led team that drafted the nation's first National Mental Health Policy.
Impact on Tuberculosis
‣ Identified the first patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB): In 2008, TH collaborated with the National Tuberculosis & Leprosy Control Program, the Clinton Foundation with support from Partners in Health to diagnose the first two patients with MDR-TB and helped the Ministry of Health submit a successful Green Light Committee application to procure vital second-line tuberculosis drugs.
Impact on Primary Healthcare // Health Systems Strengthening
‣ Renovated Primary Healthcare Infrastructure: Built Liberia’s first Chronic Disease Clinic, integrating HIV/TB care within a primary healthcare clinic while expanding outpatient service
capacity at Tubman Hospital. TH also developed a new ambulance service to reach sick
patients beyond the catchment area of Tubman Hospital.
‣ Strengthened Human Resources in Health: Hired physicians, physician assistants and nurses
to cover health staff shortages at Tubman Hospital. On several occasions, TH-supported
doctors have been the only physicians serving at Tubman Hospital – a public referral center for
over 300,000 people.
‣ Expanded the reach of Liberia's Basic Package of Health Services: Trained community health workers
in delivering key components of the Basic Package of Health Services, including malaria bednet
distribution, screenings of mental health disorders, and tuberculosis treatment.
Impact on Poverty // Social and Economic Rights
‣ Reduced poverty: In accordance with "Lift Liberia", the national Povery Reduction Strategy, TH provided community-based livelihood support and social protection (including food security, agricultural and small business training) to over 300 people living with HIV/AIDS and their families.
‣ Provided jobs for the poor: Trained and provided jobs for over 50 community health workers in Tchien district, one of the largest employers of the poor in the region.
