Responding to Tuberculosis and Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB)
In November 2008, the National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Program (NLTCP) collaborated with Tiyatien Health and the Clinton Foundation's HIV/AIDS Initiative, with support from Partners in Health, to diagnose the first cases of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Liberia, through performing drug sensitivity testing (DST) for patients at TB Annex (Monrovia).
This work extends from TH's collaboration with the Liberian Ministry of Health to strengthen tuberculosis treatment and care at Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital in Zwedru since 2006.
TH is working with the NLTCP to develop a Tuberculosis and MDR-TB response plan focused on:
- Recruiting a full-time National Tuberculosis Program Advisor to assist the NTLCP indeveloping and managing comprehensive programs for the prevention, treatment, and control of TB, TB/HIV, and MDR-TB;
- Providing technical assistance to the development of Liberia’s national TB control strategy, and its implementation with special focus on expanding high-quality community-based DOTS and HIV/TB service integration;
- Strengthening training on tuberculosis, HIV/TB and MDR-TB management for clinical and non-clinical staff at public tuberculosis treatment sites.
